NGC 3227 and NGC 3226 (Arp 94)

Show astrometry data

NGC 3227, an intermediate spiral galaxy, is interacting with elliptical dwarf galaxy NGC 3226. Together, Arp 94 lies in the constellation Leo approximately 50 million light years from Earth.

NGC 3227's defining feature is its active galactic nucleus (AGN), a Seyfert nucleus, likely containing a supermassive black hole.

At the top of the arc of smaller background galaxies to the left are spiral galaxy PGC 30397 and PGC 1605532, which are thought to be interacting. These galaxies are approximately 595 million light years from Earth.

This image was shot through L, R, G and B filters using our 600mm OS RiLA, 400mm OS RiFAST, 400mm OS RiDK, and 4-telescope OS RH 300mm array. The final image comprises 1,434 individual unguided subexposuress ranging from 5-8 minutes, totalling 142 hours. Shot over 5 nights from our observatory in Samphran, Thailand, under Bortle 6+ skies.
